Behind the world-famous surf breaks of the North Shore lies a trail less traveled but equally rewarding. The ʻEhukai Pillbox Trail begins just across from ʻEhukai Beach Park and climbs steadily through shaded forest terrain to reveal panoramic views of Sunset Beach, Pupukea, and Waimea Bay. With its mix of peaceful woods and dramatic coastal lookouts, this hike offers a quieter contrast to the bustling beach scene below.
The trail begins behind Sunset Beach Elementary School, winding through groves of ironwood and guava trees. The forest hums with birdsong and the distant sound of crashing surf. As the path ascends, roots and rocks provide natural steps, and after a moderate climb, hikers reach two concrete pillboxes perched on a ridgeline. These remnants of World War II serve today as observation points for some of the most scenic coastal vistas on the island.
From the bunkers, you can gaze down at the rolling blue waves of the North Shore and the winding curves of the coastline. On clear days, the view stretches for miles. Though not as crowded as other pillbox trails, ʻEhukai still requires good shoes and a bit of care, especially after rain when the trail can get slick. It’s a perfect addition to a North Shore outing—start the day with a hike, then head to the beach or grab lunch from a nearby food truck. It’s Oʻahu at its most dynamic.
